A PRACTICAL RESOURCE FOR OVERSEAS PRODUCERS
Your Japan
shoot brief.
Commissioning a shoot in Japan from abroad starts with a shared picture of the job. This editable brief helps your local crew understand the shots, the location and what your editor needs, even when your team cannot travel.

What should a Japan filming brief include?
A useful brief connects the location and essential shots to the finished edit. Include your preferred dates, technical requirements, intended usage, budget and who approves the plan. If the location is not yet known, describe what the scene needs to communicate and share visual references.
Start with the shots the edit cannot work without. A wide establishing view, a small detail and a sound recording can ask for different light, equipment and time. Mark optional coverage separately so the crew can discuss a realistic priority order.
For remote approvals, share your time zone and who can make decisions. Discuss when you would need to review sample frames or speak to the crew. A live link depends on location, connectivity and the agreed setup; it should be planned rather than assumed.
Make a copy. Fill in what you know.
You can leave questions unanswered. Use a map pin for a known place, or say that location research is needed. Tell us which requests are essential and which are open to discussion.

Before filming, confirm resolution, frame rate, colour workflow, aspect ratios, sound and file organisation. A reference image explains a look; it does not define a delivery format. Include both.
Specify where the footage will appear and whether anyone else needs to use it. Agree media, territories, duration and contributor permissions in the project scope. If you need a finished film, include editing, review and alternate-version requirements in the brief.
A location being visible on a map does not establish filming access. Private locations, interviews, aerial work, travel and weather dependencies need to be reviewed before a shooting day is confirmed. The quotation sets out the feasible crew, equipment, schedule and costs.
